The definition of sustainability or “sustainable development” was born in 1987 with the Brundtland Report.

Sustainable development: a condition in which the needs of present generations are met, without compromising the satisfaction of the needs of future generations.

Nothing to complain about, I allow myself to “improve” it a bit by adding some concepts that are really fundamental for me when we talk about sustainability.

In my opinion, sustainability must be strongly linked to these words:

BALANCE: Sustainability is like a 3-legged table, to stay balanced it must rest on all 3 legs. In fact, it is enough for even just one leg to break, for the table to fall to the ground.

The 3 legs of sustainability, known by the acronym ESG, concern the aspect: ENVIRONMENT SOCIAL ECONOMIC.

Any sustainability project must always include them, otherwise we cannot talk about sustainability.

WEIGHING: Strongly connected to balance is definitely weighting/moderation.

In fact, every word always has another word that means exactly the opposite, such as, good and bad. Here, in my opinion all these words that I am listing are “synonyms” of the word sustainability. But let’s get back to us, I was saying that every word has an opposite word, very well….

Do you want to know what the opposite of sustainability is? EXTREMISM!

#YES to protecting the environment, #NO to extreme environmentalists who only create inconvenience for people.

#YES to gender equality, #NO to the exasperated convenient feminism that tells of a world that does not exist.

#YES to purchasing goods and services to satisfy one’s needs, #NO to unbridled consumerism.

WELLBEING: All these #NOs just listed have another thing in common, they do not bring any benefit, on the contrary… Sustainability is therefore linked to the word #WELLBEING because it must necessarily bring wellbeing and benefits for the community.

DURATION: #TIME is a fundamental variable for sustainability. A project can be said to be sustainable if and only if it also “stands up” in the long term like the 3-legged table I was talking about at the beginning of this article.

I’ll add one last thing before concluding my first article on the blog… Also dealing with #INNOVATION, I want to say that innovation is an important component of #SUSTAINABILITY that leads to #PROGRESS.

I hope you like the article! If you want, leave a comment and tell me what you think.

See you soon
