Lately, there is a lot of talk about the Blue Economy.
The Blue Economy is a development model aimed at ensuring the sustainable use of ocean resources, balancing economic growth, employment, and innovation with environmental protection. In practice, it enhances everything the sea can offer—such as fishing, tourism, and marine renewable energy - in a responsible and sustainable way.It is an innovative approach because it no longer sees the sea as an endless resource to exploit, but rather as a finite and currently threatened element that is essential for regulating the climate and preserving biodiversity.
The term "Blue Economy" was coined by Gunter Pauli, a Belgian entrepreneur and innovator, who promoted this idea as a way to integrate economy and sustainability by using marine resources without harming ecosystems.
Broadly speaking, it is based on a few key principles:
Sustainable Fishing: the use of practices that maintain fish stocks at sustainable levels. The Blue Economy encourages economic growth and job creation without compromising the ocean's ability to regenerate.
Responsible Aquaculture: managing fish farming in a way that minimizes environmental impact.
Marine Renewable Energy: investments and development of technologies that harness energy from waves, tides, and wind.
Sustainable Coastal Tourism: promoting tourist activities that respect the marine and cultural environment.
Marine Waste Management: reducing and effectively managing waste to curb marine pollution.
For our country, which has strong ties to the sea and its culture, this is an economic development model that can bring growth by developing sectors like sustainable fishing, maritime tourism, and marine renewable energy, while creating jobs in innovative and sustainable maritime fields. It also encourages investment in research and innovation and promotes practices that preserve marine ecosystems, which are essential for both the health of the planet and the economy.
A healthy sea brings enormous benefits—not only environmentally, but also economically.
See you soon,
